Rush hour commuters should watch for distracted drivers

While most motorists drive appropriately in rush hour traffic, some don't take the steps necessary to remain safe. Instead, they take risks that put everyone on the road in a dangerous position.

As a rush hour commuter, it's important that you never become distracted while you are behind the wheel. Along with this, make sure you watch for others who may be distracted.

For instance, if you see somebody who is distracted, such as a driver who is texting, do your best to keep a safe distance. This way, if he or she makes a mistake, you can avoid an accident.

Types of distracted driving

In rush hour, it only takes a minor mistake by one driver to cause a serious crash that involves multiple vehicles and injures several people. There are three primary types of distracted driving. They are:

  • Visual distraction: This occurs when a driver is not focused on the road, but instead looking at something else in his or her vehicle. A common example of this is reading a text message.
  • Cognitive distraction: A driver's mind should be focused on the road at all times. If somebody stops paying attention, it's known as a cognitive distraction. This could happen if a driver is talking to a passenger or thinking about something unrelated to driving.
  • Manual distraction: This occurs when a driver removes one or both hands from the steering wheel. Some examples include answering a text message, reaching for a cellphone, adjusting the radio, and applying makeup.

Any of these distractions can lead to a motor vehicle accident.

If you find yourself involved in a rush hour accident, do the following:

  • Move your car to safety
  • Contact the police
  • Seek medical treatment as soon as possible after the accident
  • Take notes about what happened
  • Learn more about your legal rights

While your health is top priority, there will come a point when you need to focus on your legal rights and how your life has changed as a result of the accident. Don't hesitate to learn more about the ways in which you can receive compensation for your injuries and other damages.
